Peace Longings

I.

If only we could laugh together

With pure joy

If only we could play together

Running free

If only we could trust

and let go

If only kindness

Was at the top of our list

Instead of the unmentionables

Which I will not mention

Because you know,

They are blasted over us

Over and over until

We are numb

If only we were as

The little child stood in our midst

Clapping his hands

In glee

A smile that is wide and open

As the ocean-free

Forgiveness will bring us back

Home again

Given and received

And wipe away every tear

Root out all the bitterness

So the tender root of joy

Can push up it’s head

II.

Longing for Peace

Reconciliation, forgiveness

Starting fresh again

Prince of Peace – Come

Show us your ways

Teach us your paths

Help us to walk in the way

Of peace

A humble road

Admitting we have

Done wrong

Asking for forgiveness

Giving it

How we bungle these things

With pride, fear

Protecting ourselves

Our interests

Lay down these weapons

Lay them down

III.

How many tears

Can the oceans hold?

When will this violence

Cease?

What will stop the cycle?

More violence is not the answer!

Have we not learned that, yet?

It only prolongs and increases

The destruction and death.

We must wake up!

All must do the work

Of the farmer

Go back to the basics

Sow the seeds of peace

Tears of repentance

And forgiveness

The courageous ones

Will walk towards their enemies

With hands empty

Save for peace

This earth does not belong

To those who devour it

But to the Meek

The gentle of heart

The tide will turn

Wait for it

Maundy Thursday: Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled

DSCN1750

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You trust in God. Trust also in me. (Jesus) John 14:1

What about when violence seems to be in the water we drink, in the air we breathe, the rule of the day?  What about when lives of children are taken without a second thought, gunned down on beaches, in airports and by drones taking out whole families?  When a president of a private christian university encourages students to arm themselves and take out people of a different religion?

How do we live in these days when politicians skew all decency and accusations fly through the air waves thick with fear and racism?

Do we pull back and hide, stockpile goods and arms?  Protecting ourselves and a few others perhaps?  I seem to recall One saying “if you choose to save your life you will lose it”.

This terror, this fear is like a vortex, spinning out of control,  if you get too close to it will suck you in and down.

There is another way.  It is a way that refuses to lump people into categories of other, evil, enemies, or sub- human.  It chooses instead to pray for, to bless, yes even love our enemies. It chooses to reach out across barriers to the other, the one who is different, has a different hue to their skin, or language on their tongue or culture I do not understand.  It chooses to seek understanding and to bridge the gap rather than build another wall.

This is the path of peace, the way of love, the road to life.

Here we are today Maundy Thursday, approaching Good Friday, before we can get to Easter.  What lessons are still here for us to learn as we see Jesus throw off his robe, tie a towel around his waist, pick up a basin of water, and wash his fearful, doubting, even betraying disciples’ feet? This, a precursor to what was to come the next day.  He laid down his life for all.  He calls us to follow Him.

“Blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.”

There is a way through these times.  One deep breath, one step, one prayer, one cry, one embrace at a time.  It is a humble path and no one is saying it is easy. Is it possible?  Well, what is impossible with man, is possible with God.  Let’s choose this path of peace instead of participating in the destruction of our planet.

Simplicity

SprintPhoto_bleyay

Could it be

as simple as

paying attention

to the messages

God sends me

every day

and

loving

those put in

my path?

The messages

(love notes really)

delight me

and call forth

gratitude and

praise.

The loving part

stretches me

to become

more of the person

I am meant to be

and strengthens

the other

on their

journey.

Strengthened bonds

build communities

and the world

becomes a better

place

for all to live.

Don’t Forget the Mystery

This life is more than it seems,

we know.

More than these mortal bodies.

More than the eye can see,

the ear can hear,

we’ve been told.

Follow the path

ahead of you.

When all seems blocked

or obscured –

wait.

Revelation will come,

light will shine,

a voice will speak,

or cloud will surround

and open the way

for you to go.

Transformation

or Transfiguration

will expand

your heart and life

to carry more

love and glory.

Choices

Choices lie before me

Which path will I choose?

Will I choose a path of faith, hope and love?

Will I take the time to listen?

Will I discern the gravity pulling me?

Will I feel the ancient forces of good and evil?

Will I choose the good?

Will I ask for wisdom in the choosing?

That is my hope

That is my prayer

I’m still learning

I’m still growing

The Path of Love

The path of love

Gets tangled at times

With weeds of

Irritations and frustrations.

Addressing the under brush

Clears the way

For the real

Choices to grow

In love again

This garden does not grow

Without my attention.

Planting new seeds

Watering, weeding

And plenty of sunshine

Of course.

What does love need

To grow again

Today?

I must ask myself.

I love how

Love grows love

When I love

My beloved.

Two Worlds

Living in

Breathing in

Two worlds

Visible and the invisible

Intersecting

Reflecting

Sometimes rejecting

The other

Light and darkness

Competing for

Our allegiance

Our loyalty

And our attention

Choose a path

To love another

Speak a kind word

Comfort a broken heart

Share meal

Pray a prayer

Forgive

The two worlds

Become one

Your kingdom comes

Your will is done

The Path of Peace

Guide my feet

In the path of peace

May I do my part

That war may cease

Teach me how

To listen well

To refrain from judgment

Sending others to hell

It’s not my place

It’s not my call

Judgment stirs up strife

It builds a wall

May I understand

What it is to be

In another’s place

Not obsessed with me

Lean into You

Sit at Your feet

See through Your eyes

Everyone I meet

Invite the stranger in

Share a meal

Enjoy diversity

Let kindness heal

Fear will die

I can lay it to rest

When I choose love

It is the very best

Love will do the job

It will get to work

Root out the darkness

Wherever it may lurk

A Long Walk

I am in the middle

Of a long walk

With God

A journey

A pilgrimage

From those ahead

I receive these assurances

“Yes, it gets

Sweeter and sweeter

His face

Becomes clearer

His love

Thickens the air”

I have already

Tasted

That thickened air

And I give those same

Assurances

Back down the path

Behind me

A few warnings as well

Watch that curve

Slow down and rest

I have crashed right there

And stay clear of that

Mud hole

I was stuck there for a while

Don’t give up

It’s worth the climb

Green pastures

And still waters up here

The view is spectacular

The air is sweet

Lenten Post # 7

I find myself

Hacking my way through a jungle

I cannot see clearly

But my heart compass is set north

Deep calling to deep

All of a sudden

Breaking free

Onto a well-worn

Path

Sprinkled with Saint and Angel dust

I am not alone after all
