Good-bye 2020

Photo by Julia Volk on Pexels.com

May this new year

Show the fruit of what we have learned

from the troubles and sorrows of the passing year

How we need each other

Always have, but somehow

Lost sight of our connection

To each other

To our earth home

To our heaven coming down home

May the fire

The flood

The hurricane force winds

The pandemic

Be used

To strengthen and straighten the bent and broken

Places in our hearts

To repair and renew

The moral compass

of all, including

The powers that rule

The powers that have crushed

The powers arising

Replacing the old

Bringing the new

Until, until

“The kingdom of this world

becomes the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ” *

How long

How long

How we long for that day

What ifs

What if we can’t go to church

To understand what the church really is?

What if the virus is showing us

The viruses in our hearts?

What if the worship of mammon*

Was just too much for the earth to bear?

What if our independence

Drives us to community?

What if all the grief and loss

Teaches us to love again?

*Matthew 6:24

Take Care of the Earth

Let’s take care of the earth

All people

Everywhere

It is our only home.

The stars and the planets

Are too far away.

They were not given to us

To inhabit with these bodies,

but to guide and inspire.

We can be

The gentle

The meek,

The careful

Who inherit the earth.

We can think of our children

And their children

And their children’s children.

We can share her resources

We do not need to hoard them

She has enough for us all.

Enjoy her beauty

She feeds your souls

Be inspired to create

More beauty

More abundance

We can do this together.

Lament for the Earth

forest fire smoke burning

God we ask for your mercy and help.

We have filled the waters of the earth with poison and pollution.

We have harmed people, animals, fish and plants with this water.

We have continued to fill the waters with chemicals, plastics and garbage even when we know this is harmful.

God have mercy on us and forgive us.

Help us to care for these precious waters that sustain us.

We have poisoned and polluted the land.

We have destroyed forests and fields.

Our foods are no longer rich in nutrients.

We continue to harm people, animals and plants with our poisons and pollution.

God have mercy on us and forgive us.

Help us to care for the land that sustains us.

We have poisoned and polluted the air.

We continue to burn fossil  fuels that are heating our atmosphere.

We are harming people, animals and plants with these poisons and pollution.

We know this, yet we continue to burn and pollute our air.

God have mercy on us and forgive us.

Help us to care for the air that sustains us.

The earth is suffering and groaning

With floods and fires.

Glaciers are melting and forests are disappearing

While deserts are increasing.

Oh God forgive us!

We have done this to the beautiful earth you created, filled with living creatures that we are harming, including ourselves.

We have ignored the warnings and

We have not acted when we realized long ago we were culpable.

God we ask you to help us do what is right.

Help us to care for our planet and all who inhabit it.

Even now, if you do not help us it will be too late.

We put our hope in you. Help us and sustain us.

God have mercy on us! Amen

Peace Longings Part Three

dscn12101.jpg

(I am reblogging this today.  It was part of a three part poem I wrote in 2016. A longing for peace that has only increased.)

How many tears

Can the oceans hold?

When will this violence

Cease?

What will stop the cycle?

More violence is not the answer!

Have we not learned that, yet?

It only prolongs and increases

The destruction and death.

We must wake up!

All must do the work

Of the farmer

Go back to the basics

Sow the seeds of peace

Tears of repentance

And forgiveness

The courageous ones

Will walk towards their enemies

With hands empty

Save for peace

This earth does not belong

To those who devour it

But to the Meek

The gentle of heart

The tide will turn

Wait for it

Psalm reflections

CIMG4491

“Your statutes have been like songs to me

Whenever I have lived as a stranger.” Psalm 119:14

I have been a stranger

  in the land

A foreigner in this place

  I am obtuse

To the language

  and culture

Yet one constant –

The song of your presence

I am no stranger

  to you

No foreigner

  in this land

Where heaven meets earth

  the song is born

Where you call me your own

you lead me by the hand

“Show me the road that I must walk

For I lift my soul to you.” Psalm 143:8

The road divides before me

Shall I turn left or right?

I lift up my eyes,

My soul,

My prayer,

I put my trust in your

Unfailing love

I make my choice

And follow you.

Shameless Audacity

IMG_8653

Shameless audacity

Just go ahead and ask

You will not regret it

Pour out your words

Coming straight from your heart

What do you need?

What do you want?

Who are you carrying

Close in your thoughts?

Bring it all up

Bring it all out

Pray –

What will it hurt?

You will be welcomed

You will be heard

In this place

Where heaven meets earth

Connection becomes communion

Ask, seek, knock

Believe and receive

The Spirit is yours

Peace Longings

I.

If only we could laugh together

With pure joy

If only we could play together

Running free

If only we could trust

and let go

If only kindness

Was at the top of our list

Instead of the unmentionables

Which I will not mention

Because you know,

They are blasted over us

Over and over until

We are numb

If only we were as

The little child stood in our midst

Clapping his hands

In glee

A smile that is wide and open

As the ocean-free

Forgiveness will bring us back

Home again

Given and received

And wipe away every tear

Root out all the bitterness

So the tender root of joy

Can push up it’s head

II.

Longing for Peace

Reconciliation, forgiveness

Starting fresh again

Prince of Peace – Come

Show us your ways

Teach us your paths

Help us to walk in the way

Of peace

A humble road

Admitting we have

Done wrong

Asking for forgiveness

Giving it

How we bungle these things

With pride, fear

Protecting ourselves

Our interests

Lay down these weapons

Lay them down

III.

How many tears

Can the oceans hold?

When will this violence

Cease?

What will stop the cycle?

More violence is not the answer!

Have we not learned that, yet?

It only prolongs and increases

The destruction and death.

We must wake up!

All must do the work

Of the farmer

Go back to the basics

Sow the seeds of peace

Tears of repentance

And forgiveness

The courageous ones

Will walk towards their enemies

With hands empty

Save for peace

This earth does not belong

To those who devour it

But to the Meek

The gentle of heart

The tide will turn

Wait for it

Welcome Spring

cropped-cimg3824.jpg

Welcome Spring

Once again renew our hearts

With hope we cannot otherwise find

Unless you bloom with blossoms pink

And bulbs push up the soggy earth

Unless you conquer winter’s frost

With wind’s strong blasts

And skies that rend the heavy clouds

Welcome Spring

Renew our hearts with joy

To sing the ancient songs that well within

When sights of life and beauty overcome

Calling forth our voices

Our steps will lighten into the dance

Joining all creation as life renews itself again

This time each year

Last Night in Boston

Fresh snow fell through the night

Washing the world again

covering all the barren trees

with a fresh cold compress

Given as a gift

to slow

to heal

to strengthen what remains

until spring thaw

when sap begins

to flow

and new life appears

in bud and blossom

Hope arises in our hearts

as it always does each spring

reminding us not all is lost

life will be renewed

again
