Fertile Ground

IMG_7173

What is this fertile ground

Where hoods are removed

And torches lit?

Where these actions and words

Of violence and hate

Reverberate across the earth?

Where radicalized 20 year olds

Fed on hate

Can take extreme views

To their conclusions and kill?

Is this an exposure

For all to see

The faulty foundations

In need of repair?

We cannot move forward

Until we address

The underlying decay

Made evident by recent events

Is it force upon force,

Violence answering violence

That will do this work?

No, that will only destroy

What is good and best

Instead

Call the elders

Listen to the truly wise

Study their words and their works

The ones who know how to love

To overcome evil with good

To push back darkness with light

The ones who have done this work

Can shine a light that we all

Can follow.

Ask the question

Love Grows

When the seams of life unravel

When fog blurs vision

The way forward is obscured

When positions are hardened

Anger flares

Resolution and reconciliation

Seem millions of miles away

Remember

The greatest of all is love

It is the pulse that runs the universe

Slow down and listen

Feel it running through

Your veins

Ask the question –

What does love look like?

Give imagination free reign

Wait for your thoughts to form

Then get ready

Bring a friend, sister or brother

Go do that good

You are inspired to do.

Be Your Best

Be your best

Come alive

Breathe in life

Inspire me

With your love

With your courage

Be your best

Find a way

Show the way

I will follow

Be my best

Together we

Sow the seeds

Of love and courage

Start Small

img_8007

Start small

With steps towards

Good and beauty

Towards life and healing

Otherwise

You may find

Discouragement and

Disillusionment

Tagging, unwanted

Along

You may find

You don’t have

All you need

Lose hope

And not finish

Start small

You will add

Piece by piece

To what you have

Wondering where did

It all come from

Whether it be word

Or color or brick or paint

It won’t matter because

It will be there

To fit into the place it goes

And you will see

Unfolding before your eyes

(Maybe not exactly as you thought!)

The dream, the plan,

The drawing, the house

The life

finishing in all it’s glory

Let’s Trump Evil with Good and Win a Big Chocolate Bar!

Let’s Trump Evil with Good and Win a Big Chocolate Bar!

Here is how to do it.  I have 5 big bars of Trader Joe’s Chocolate for the first 5 people who invite a Muslim friend, co-worker, or neighbor to dinner.  I ask that you simply invite them, cook a simple Halal meal, which could be vegetarian if you don’t have access to Halal meat.  Now ask your guests questions about their life and listen.  Please just listen and learn some things you’ve never known before.  This is how we make friends, how we make peace and defuse the crazy phobias flying around these days.  The first 5 people that get back to me with their address (US only please) and a simple description of their time I will send a 1 pound chocolate bar. I suspect you will receive an invitation in return and make a life long friend.  I hope this is true. How about taking this challenge?  Especially if you have never done this before.

Let us be world changers together and truly “Love our neighbors as ourselves”. “Doing unto others what we would like them to do to us”, takes some thought.  What would it be like to be a Muslim in our country right now?  How could I do something to help ease their fears and anxiety?  What if I was in a foreign country where words were flying across the airwaves and threats being made about people of my faith? A simple invitation of hospitality might be a start.  May God bless you!  I hope to hear from you soon!

Invasive Species

The other day I was hacking some ivy back that was trying to take over an azalea plant in my backyard.  Our yard is pretty wild and overgrown.  We have a lot of trees and bushes that I am slowly learning to recognize.  Gardening has not been a huge part of our lives since we have lived most of our adult years in China and Central Asia.  Three quarters of those years were in apartments.  Now here we are back from the borderlands with house and garden.

As I was hacking the ivy, I thought I would take a swipe at this invasive species that has slowly been taking over one area of our yard.  It has been bugging me for a while, but I have mostly ignored it.  Everyone I’ve asked has recommended spraying it.  But since I have a lung condition that is probably environmentally related, and a little dog, and live near the Puget Sound where our run off water runs into, I haven’t done that. So I started pulling up the weeds one by one roots and all.  Bill saw what I was doing and joined the party.  We made a little dent in the problem.  Not major, but a start and if we keep at it we can maybe get rid of most of it and then be inspired to look around at what our next project can be.

So I started thinking, because I am always looking for meaning, messages and metaphors in life.  What if these invasive species represent evil? War, human trafficking, greed, violence, injustice etc, etc.  You name it. What if we just left it to take over? Ignored it? Even got used to it? The world would be a wild place and I don’t mean wild in a good way.

Thank God good people everyday are out there doing good every day keeping evil at bay.  They are fighting inertia and making a difference in families, neighborhoods, cities, countries and the world.

We can be overwhelmed with all the invasive species or we can find our place in the garden and get to work.  Whether it is cooking food for hungry people, making friends with our neighbors near and far, helping children, praying and blessing others, caring for the elderly or disabled, working for peace and reconciliation in the hot spots, or encouraging a friend or stranger.  There are so many ways to honor God with good works.  We all have a part of pushing back the darkness in our day and in our times.

Jesus as always is our example. He wasn’t fretting or frantic over the evil of his day or the evil of all days put together and laid on him.  He had work the Father gave him to do, a job at hand and he steadily did it, until His final hour. He was not overcome by evil but overcame evil with good.

The Raid

It looked like a crow was raiding a robin’s nest in the big plum-tree at the end of the yard.  All the robins and chickadees were stirred up flapping and shrieking. It’s gone now.  What damage did it do?

World events and ones closer to home keep me thinking of injustice.  The powerful rule the weak. The unjust prey on those they can trample and oppress. Guns can be had easily by young mad men bent on destruction leaving beloved ones dead in the street. Who will stop this lunacy? How many have to say enough is enough?

The inexpensive jam I bought got to me yesterday.  I normally read the labels, but it was late and I was in a hurry.  Why are companies still making jam with high fructose corn syrup?  I know it must be the cheapest way, the biggest profit margin to be gained.  In the meantime, the rich get richer and the poor get fatter and sicker.

The crow came back.  Was it for another mouthful? When will enough be enough? What can one person do?  I can’t climb that tree and keep shooing away the crow today or everyday.  How do I live in this perplexing world where there is still so much beauty, yet evil runs rampant?

I read today: “Evil may still be a four letter word, but so, thank God,  is love.” (Evil and the Justice of God, N.T. Wright)

I am reminded of the holy words:  “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”  (Romans 12:21) It does no one any good for me to despair, in other words be overcome by evil. It does many much good if I continue to do good and continue to hope. The choice is there, harder on some days than others.

Advent: The Seed

Take a seed, any seed

If you didn’t know what it was

you would write it off as a speck of dust

blowing in the wind.

Yet,

the wind

the rain

the earth and sky

all together working

with the DNA

encased in the hard shell

and the far-reaching possibilities

of that seed are immense

as the stars in sky

and the sand

on the shore.

Each of us

a seed

blowing on the wind

falling then planted

growing.

The potential for good

is great

for making a difference

on the earth

among all people

to be peacemakers

lovers of God and man.

It’s all there from the beginning

locked away and waiting

to be released

in the right time.

Seed of David, Seed of God

Son of Man, Son of God

bringing peace on earth

We hear

heaven is coming

and we will see the King.

Even so

come.

Choices

Choices lie before me

Which path will I choose?

Will I choose a path of faith, hope and love?

Will I take the time to listen?

Will I discern the gravity pulling me?

Will I feel the ancient forces of good and evil?

Will I choose the good?

Will I ask for wisdom in the choosing?

That is my hope

That is my prayer

I’m still learning

I’m still growing
