From There to Here

There he is again

The little boy showing up

Holding his broken heart

Looking for that love

That never seems to be enough

There she is again

The little girl hiding behind

Her mother’s skirt

Not sure the world

Is a safe place after all

These wounds we carry

From there to here

From then to now

Haunt us from time to time

When they show up

Pay attention

Reassure

The child within

Yes, there is enough

To go around

Yes, love will take us through

All the way

To the end

Let the flowers

Let the flowers

Do their work

Inviting you to smile

To enjoy their beauty

When you see them

In the vase

On the stem

Or blooming from the branches

Stop and let them

Share their joy

If there is any time you need it

It is now

Their joy

Their beauty

Can birth hope

In your heart

In these dark days

Waiting for spring

Let them do their work

Then you can do yours

Falling

I.

It seems this year

More than ever

The fall colors are

Astounding me

They call me

To stop

 Breathe deeper

Slower

Let my burdens fall

I drove up a winding road

Under a canopy

Of fall foliage

It felt like a giant hug

An invitation to joy

My heart rejoiced

II.

Walking in the woods today

The maple trees ablaze

Letting go

Leaf by leaf

Fluttering and falling

To join the ever growing piles

Dampened by the rain

That my tears

My sorrows

My loss and grief

One by one

Would softly fall away

Like the maple leaves

To Become mulchy piles

To feed proceeding generations

Grief Haiku (for Marianne)

Marianne helping me with a knotty problem.

(Marianne helping me with a knotty problem)

She has gone away

Released her breath and spirit

We have grief and tears

Lonely is this life

Soul trapped in body shell

Freed for true union

She carried many

Can too much love break your heart

Apparently so

Haiku Practice

IMG_2495

Self Examination

Heart weigh and dissect

Examine content with care

Cold stone or warm love

Breathe

Can peace rule my day

Or worry fret it away

A deep breath will help

Deciduous

Trees finish their work

Shedding of best future hopes

Are we listening

Shameless Audacity

IMG_8653

Shameless audacity

Just go ahead and ask

You will not regret it

Pour out your words

Coming straight from your heart

What do you need?

What do you want?

Who are you carrying

Close in your thoughts?

Bring it all up

Bring it all out

Pray –

What will it hurt?

You will be welcomed

You will be heard

In this place

Where heaven meets earth

Connection becomes communion

Ask, seek, knock

Believe and receive

The Spirit is yours

Winter’s Hold

Winter’s hold

Is deep

Suggesting it

Will not let go

This time

The ice will never thaw

Life will always be hard

Hope is out of reach

Yet, I saw

The dew had frozen into

Delicate crystals, clinging

To the branches

Breaking my heart

With beauty as

I walked along

The frozen path

The mystery of

The fire in the stove

Sending out it’s warmth

Encircling me

As I try to make

Sense of this world

Is a comfort to body

And soul

The child’s pure laughter

Over a game of

Peek-a-boo

Beckons me

Don’t give up your search

For hidden treasures

Love, hope, joy, peace

Are in need of finding

Resolutions

IMG_7132

Some are about loosing

(weight or bad habits)

Some are about gaining

(wealth or a spouse)

All about changes to make in the year

Yet how much do I control

What happens to me?

Surely my choices are factors

In the matter

But I truly believe

All things considered

That the most important change I can make

In a year

Is what comes from my heart

And works itself out

in the way

I treat others

(And that is including

myself)

The Enemy Within

Again hate and fear are splashed across the pages of our newspapers, our screens, and our hearts. How is our world continuing to spiral further and further out of control? What will stop this craziness?  It’s not just the terrible violent acts, but also the hateful and fearful aftermath. Fingers are being pointed in all directions.  We really want answers and we want to blame someone other than ourselves and our own communities for these horrific acts of violence.

Here’s how Eugene Peterson translates the words of Jesus in The Message, regarding the final days. Matthew 24:11:  “In the confusion, lying preachers will come forward and deceive a lot of people. For many others, the overwhelming spread of evil will do them in—nothing left of their love but a mound of ashes.”

There is a lot of confusion, a lot of voices, deception and spreading of evil. What has happened to the love in our hearts?   Do you know that fear kills love?  More words from The Message this time from 1 John 4:17-18  God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, ….There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear…

For those who want to blame Islam – I want to say this is not Islam, read these words translated from the Qur’an: “Whoever kills a person [unjustly]…it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind.”(Qur’an, 5:32)

And for those who are asking the question (I have heard it too many times): “Why is the Muslim community not speaking out?”  They are! I hear them! Maybe their voices are not being listened to, or the wrong people are being heard.

For those who fear (as in fear the slippery slope) the LGBTQ community.  These ones are beloved of God! Who does the right to judge and condemn belong to? I remember there is only One Judge and it is not me. This judge is full of mercy – he even loves me, in all my messy brokenness.

The only remedy I understand from the words of my Saviour are “Love one another, this is my command.”  Not just love those who love you, remember? Love your neighbor, love your enemy.  Those following him are supposed to be known by their love, not by their condemnation.

So if the case is that the enemy is not out there but within our own hearts, if truly our love is growing cold, we better hurry and learn how to love again before all that is left is a pile of ashes.
