Poetry

Georgina

Grief has been running rivers through my heart these past few days.

You left us early and with little warning.

Half a world away and more than ten years since I have seen you.

Yet, the weight of your impression on my life remains.

Your exuberance for life, your passionate love for your Savior,

And your gentle care for those around you nudge me in those directions.

You continue to make me want to live my life full of love and purpose.

Omaha

The Omaha winter

Stretches its fingers

Into the fall

With crisp blasts of air

It’s a warning

To prepare

“Don’t take me lightly!”

She says

“I am just around the corner.”

The swirling colors

Of the trees

Take their time

To reply

“OK, OK,

We’re leaving

We’re leaving.”

Everything

Everything lost

Shall be found

Everything left behind

Catches up

There is a rhythm

There is a rhyme

A purpose

And a plan

A weaving and a spinning

Healing and redemption

When we see

As we are seen

And know

As we are known

When love reigns

In the air

On the earth

And in the sea

Summer’s End

It was bound to come

Tourists are going home

Leaving the beaches and the board walks

School bells are ringing

Teachers are working hard again

Last minute shopping to get the son still left in college

Supplied with peanut butter and pencils

That crispness is in the evening air

Our sunny days are numbered

Time to buy the winter fuel

Started a knitting project two days ago

(Don’t tell anyone but, I am missing the rain)

Life and Time are moving forward

We are all ushered into their dance

No one gets to sit it out

All is changing

All is turning

Words and Phrases

Words and phrases

Flutter by

Butterflies dazzling in their beauty

Will they stay in my peripheral vision?

Or, will I put out my net

And capture them in song or poem?

Others come to me stronger

Bolts of lightning

Difficult to ignore

Grabbing my attention

With a message for me

Or for another

The ache in our hearts

The ache in our hearts

Is the call

To come deeper

Come closer

To the One

Who sees us

Knows us

Loves us

And satisfies us

Beyond all measurement.

We don’t always

Recognize

The voice

In our pain

We run

To another

Temporary comfort

That leaves us

Hollow and unsatisfied

Self-hating and

Aching for

The true source

Of all that we need.

It is a learning

To be turning

Towards that faint sound

Of the rushing river

To be seeking

In desperation

For that Living Water

Like a deer

Panting

A matter of life or death

To find and

To know that

We have been found

And we are known

And brought safely

Home.

Taking This with Me

I cannot see it

But I am taking it with me

It travels well

Lasts forever

I’m hanging onto hope

Not letting it go

Even though

Hope stealers

Stand on every corner

In my mind

“Just give up!”

“You’ll never make it.”

“Life is too hard.”

No

I am not listening

Pushing past

Because

I have done this before

And I know

Life and Light

Are just beyond

The corner of my pain

Hope packs well

Into my heart

Fits snuggly next to

Faith and Love

Change

Pressure all around

Chaos in the air

I don’t know which way is up

Which is down

It must be time for change

Again

Now to see this dark

In the light

That is my challenge

That is my goal

To cooperate

With the forces at work

To change me more into

The person I long to be

The one I was breathed to be

So much is out of my control

Yet so much is in my power

To say yes

And let go

To watch this fire

Burn all that is not gold

Listening

In the dark

I lay awake

Listening

For the sounds

I cannot hear during the day

They are muffled out by machines

And words, barking dogs and my own thoughts

Before I sleep I want to hear the trains

Hugging the coastline

And the ferry’s foghorn

Blasting it’s warning as it comes

Up to the dock.

The trains are busy tonight

But try as I may

I am overcome by sleep

Before I hear the forlorn call

From the ferry.

Maybe I will hear it

In my dreams.

Fractals

Pieces of God

Treasures

Hidden in all the earth

Until we see them

And wonder how we had

Missed the evidence

Of their existence

Am I one?

With His DNA

Hidden like a diamond

To be discovered

In my heart?
