Take Beauty Personally Today

A friend of mine asked me, yesterday, if I had a word for these anxious times, this election day. Here is what came to me first:

In this time of uncertainty, anxiety, and stress I would suggest spending some time in nature. It might be taking a walk in the neighborhood, a hike in the woods or on a trail or it might be looking out your window or sitting on your balcony or back porch. I have a phrase I have used in my poetry a couple of different times. It is “take beauty personally”. Slow down, take some deep breaths and pay attention. What is calling you to notice. It may be a flower, a tree, a bird song, the sound of water from the sea or a fountain. Whatever it is, take it to heart, a message from God, the earth, or the universe that you are beloved. Find a way to let go of what is troubling you and receive the peace and love that you need.

The Raven

Flew to the tip of the garage

Standing there now

In front of us

Outside our window

Your message from the One who loves:

I am here

Standing guard

Leading you

In this work

In this way

Pay attention

Step by step

Look for me

You will find me

When you search

With all your heart

I am for you

I am renewing the earth

And it’s peoples

Don’t be afraid

I am with you

I see you

Even when you

Cannot see me

Look for me

Pay attention

Breaking

IMG_2879

This world is breaking

My heart

I can hardly breathe

Let alone write a poem

Something with a message

Pointing toward hope

This world is breaking

My heart

Not the first time,

Not the last

I am not the only one

Most are in anguish

This world is breaking

My heart

Who can we turn to

Who has words of life

Who has love

Stronger than death

A Fresh New Day

IMG_7625 (1)

A fresh new day arrives

To discover

To explore

To be awake

To be alert

For signs and wonders

Will the breeze carry the whisper

Or an eagle soaring above

Will a salmon leap for joy

Or a child laugh with glee

Who will bring a message today

I never know

Until I open my eyes and ears

All senses tuned

Waiting

Will it be the notes of a song

The wagging tail of a dog

Will it be in a dance with my sweetheart

A kind word from a stranger

Will it be a longing in my heart

Pulling me

reminding me

as I examine sacred texts

That I am loved in this world and

my name is known

In another world

Another dimension of pure

Love and light

Piercing through

Here and now

Summer Chimes

Poplar

Along ancient paths

newly surfaced again and again

poplars, descendants of

the Aged Ones,

are whispering

in the warm summer breeze

Will i stop and listen?

Autumn will come

soon enough

and lash these chimes,

winter will find them gone

Now in this warmth only

is their message heard

for this season,

later the falling leaves

and bleak branches

will have another message

Life presses in

with it’s pressures

do this, do that

and hurry up

you are late again,

fill every moment

with a call or a text

until the pulse races

and the poplars

playful message of

peace and joy

cannot be heard

for another year

Burning Bush

Burning bush

soaring eagle

spring buds

angelic singing

still small voice

Stop

pay attention

turn aside

take off my shoes

holy ground

What is the message

for me

today

Listen

it will come

Pass Out Hope

Pass out hope

With a smile

Lend a hand

Watch it grow

Kindness is language

Of the heart

Words we speak

Looks we give

All together

Send a message

May they say:

“You are loved

Worthy of attention

Something in you

Is of great value

Lift your head

Come alive

See the smile

In God’s eyes”

Autumn

The ancients figured it out for us.

They made sundials and drew up calendars.

The weather complies when it wants to.

This year in the Northwest

It aligned, and on the day it was supposed to

Autumn arrived.

We wistfully said good-bye to our long dry summer.

It was time.

The grass and trees were very thirsty.

If we want the amazing spring and summer colors

And plenty of snow in the mountains

Providing our rivers with water

Than, we must submit to the change of seasons.

When we are listening we can hear the message

That each season speaks to us.

The season has just begun and my trees are slowly turning

I want to be listening as I rake and pile leaves

As I smell wood burning in neighborhood chimneys

What message will I hear this year?

Crows

Today was about crows

First a whole flock a-squawking

With one bull frog keeping the beat

Then a lone fellow on a barren tree

Silhouetted by the snow-capped

Olympic Mountains across the Puget Sound

Beauty spoke

And Beauty called my name

I stopped and watched

Then later the message came

Alone and barren of soul at times

With impossible seas and mountains to cross

Yet, I have wings

I can fly

I am not unprepared for this journey

Still, no rushing these things

Study the contours of the wind and waves

Measure the height of the mountains

Search for the probable passes

Wonder at the depths of the sea

Take off when I am ready

Or not

Stay awhile longer

In the cozy, comfortable clan

Of squawking kin.

Words and Phrases

Words and phrases

Flutter by

Butterflies dazzling in their beauty

Will they stay in my peripheral vision?

Or, will I put out my net

And capture them in song or poem?

Others come to me stronger

Bolts of lightning

Difficult to ignore

Grabbing my attention

With a message for me

Or for another
