For Labor Day

Laboring in Omaha

Chilin’ at a closed

Blue Line Café

Music gets louder

As the closer guy

Closes

He’s tired

Must have been here

For hours

Made me the wrong drink

On the house

Hot out

Too hot to go home

To a top floor apartment

With workers

Sanding and painting

Outside the windows

At lunch our friend

Served us cheerfully

Standing on her feet all day

With a two month old baby

Cared for by her mother

All the construction workers

Right out in the hot sun

Fixing the roads

Trying to beat the harsh winter

Always waiting in the curtains

To tear up more road

For next summer’s workers

All these working

By the sweat of their brow

Some making more

Then others

All working for bosses

Who are making more

Then they are

I imagine to the hum

Of the window sander

Take Two Omaha

The Birch The Path to the Garden The Door Path obstructed by flowers Roses enough for everyone Rose

The Garden Path

The Garden Path

Was obstructed

First by orange plastic fences

And bulldozers

Wait

Next year you’ll see

The Sun Flowers

Then the secret door

Was locked

Don’t give up

Look for another way

It was there

Opening to

Fountain and flowers

This time the path

Blocked by yellow flowers

Push them aside

Let the air fill with

Their fragrance

How do we know

What to do

When our way is blocked?

We walk with the

Gardner

Waiting to be asked

In the Joslyn

Maurice Utrillo’s

Road to Puteaux

Makes me homesick

For Paris

I was there long ago

I never saw that street

The lone, wind lashed

Poplar of

Monet’s Village Street

Beckons me to remember

The Poplar lined streets

Of Central Asia

Pass the Peace

Pass the Peace

Mix in love

Pour on forgiveness

Add the yeast of the Kingdom

Now let it rise!

Choices

Choices lie before me

Which path will I choose?

Will I choose a path of faith, hope and love?

Will I take the time to listen?

Will I discern the gravity pulling me?

Will I feel the ancient forces of good and evil?

Will I choose the good?

Will I ask for wisdom in the choosing?

That is my hope

That is my prayer

I’m still learning

I’m still growing

The Path of Love

The path of love

Gets tangled at times

With weeds of

Irritations and frustrations.

Addressing the under brush

Clears the way

For the real

Choices to grow

In love again

This garden does not grow

Without my attention.

Planting new seeds

Watering, weeding

And plenty of sunshine

Of course.

What does love need

To grow again

Today?

I must ask myself.

I love how

Love grows love

When I love

My beloved.

Earth Groans

Earth Groans

Shakes and foams

Volcanoes spew

Oceans roar

Fire consumes

Chaos in the clouds

Bring destruction

To the land

Why this groaning

This upheaval

When will it cease

And subside

Another kind

Of shaking

A groaning

A fire inside

Each one of us

Is in the making

The treasure in us

Is being

Tried and tested

Extracted

From the clay

Together with creation

There will be a

Revealing

An uncovering of the glory

The Birch Tree

The birch in my backyard

Is tinkling and twinkling

In the afternoon light

It’s silver green chimes

Catching the playful breezes

As they swing by

Flexibly swaying

As the cedar

Pushes against it

Competing for the sun

How far will you

Lean and bend

Accommodating

This pushy one?

He much stronger and thicker

But you are built for dancing

I foresee you will get around him

In your stretch to the sky

Two Worlds

Living in

Breathing in

Two worlds

Visible and the invisible

Intersecting

Reflecting

Sometimes rejecting

The other

Light and darkness

Competing for

Our allegiance

Our loyalty

And our attention

Choose a path

To love another

Speak a kind word

Comfort a broken heart

Share meal

Pray a prayer

Forgive

The two worlds

Become one

Your kingdom comes

Your will is done

Hospitality

Welcome!

Come in

I am so glad to see you

Make yourself at home

Taste a bit of heaven

Earth traveler

Here is some food

Some conversation

To strengthen your soul

And lighten your heart

Rest for the next stage

Of your journey

Here is a quiet place

To hear the whispers

Of God’s love

The Handkerchief

I asked for a tissue

He gave me a handkerchief

I asked for a crumb

He invited me to a feast

I hid my face in shame

Not daring to look at His

Fearing anger

When all the while

His eyes danced

With delight

His arms outstretched

Waiting for me

To come home
