Thoughts and Prayers

With the surge in mass shootings and other forms of violence that have left families and communities broken hearted and grieving I offer this poem.

Thoughts and Prayers

No thank you

If you mean

That you are off the hook

For doing anything good

To stop this violence

No thank you

If you mean

You can let another

Year go by without

Courageously

Tackling this issue

Of gun violence

Unless you mean

The kind of prayer

Where you think and dream

With the Divine

A new path forward

Where you roll up your sleeves

And get to work

To put that new plan

Into effect

If you mean the kind of prayer

That looks first into your own heart

To see if you are complicit

In anyway to this violence

By turning your back

On those who are grieving

Their loved ones gunned

Down before their time

If you mean the kind of prayer

Where you call out to God

For mercy and forgiveness

And commit yourself

To work, to change

To make this world

Become like your prayers

If you mean

These kinds of prayers

Then yes, please

Think and pray

Roll up your sleeves

And be part of the

Answer to your prayers.

Lenten Post #4

Remain in Me

Keep in step

Keep in touch

Take my hand

Don’t lag behind or rush ahead

No lolly-gagging or reckless driving

Stick with Me

Close to Me

Stay connected

Abide in me

Walk with me

Every  day

Every hour

Every minute

Breathe me in

Like your breath

Breathe me out

To another

Don’t slough me off

Disregard me

Close your ears

When you get tempted

Or enticed

Don’t veer off to the left

Or the right

Take a detour

Or a short cut

Don’t get caught in an eddy

Don’t get stuck or left behind

Double your efforts

To rest in me

Fill your thoughts

With thoughts of me

Love me

I love you

Let my love flow in you

And out of you

Come back for more

There’s always more

You in me and I in you

And this is what it means

To live a life

Of prayer

Listening

In the dark

I lay awake

Listening

For the sounds

I cannot hear during the day

They are muffled out by machines

And words, barking dogs and my own thoughts

Before I sleep I want to hear the trains

Hugging the coastline

And the ferry’s foghorn

Blasting it’s warning as it comes

Up to the dock.

The trains are busy tonight

But try as I may

I am overcome by sleep

Before I hear the forlorn call

From the ferry.

Maybe I will hear it

In my dreams.
