Is It Just Me?

Now that Spring is around the corner

I’m not sure after all the longing for it

That I am ready to come out of my den

To feel the warmth of the sun

Which will become overwhelming soon enough

Or meet my neighbors again

After endless days indoors behind

Screens and masks, six feet apart

To greet, to smile, to chat in a cafe

The energy it will take to come up with

Lively conversation, to make that first step

To toss my masks on a heap

I have become surprisingly attached to them

All the questions I will have in my head

Are they safe? Did they get their second dose?

Who did they vote for anyways?

Do the bears, snakes, bats and other hibernating animals feel this way?

Do they tentatively step or slither out of their comfortable holes and caves

Or do they rush out without a care driven by hunger and excitement?

Winter’s Light

The house was filled with light

as the sun rose

over the tree tops

over the lake

Warmth and light

expanded our hearts

We drank it in

as we had not seen the sun

in several days.

The light also pushed

into the shadows of the house

Showing what needed

dusting, cleaning

a smudge here

a dust bunny there

a streak across the glass

Not to be afraid of the light

Let it in

Let it bring healing and cleansing

Not to be afraid of the hard work

of the soul

to bring deep lasting

much-needed change

to the shadow places in my heart

Oh that I would run to the light

and stay there

just as my small dog finds

a sunny spot

and curls up to nap

The past experiences

of facing my shadows

and not dying

but living through it

to become more whole

reminds me that I will again

live through any pain

the light may reveal

For Bill

The sun came out today

Such a rare occurrence of late

When we heard it kiss the Sound

We rushed out and made a date

Over the hill and down

To our favorite looking place

Calming our nerves at the sight

Feeling sweet warmth on our face

The grand Olympic tops

Through the clouds were sailing

An eagle soaring high

The work of the day paling
